Powerful debut novel
submitted by Lucy S on July 29, 2015, 1:07pm
This is a coming of age story that speaks of growing up in a time of turmoil and as someone who sees and feels things differently than most people around her. The main character's journey towards selfhood is paralleled with Nigeria's changes.
Highly recommend.
Beautiful submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on July 15, 2017, 9:11am A beautifully written novel about a Nigerian girl who comes of age during the country's civil war. She is sent away for safety, and falls in love with a girl. But this is not a culture the allows for women to love women, and she is a disgrace to her host family and her mother. Her life is in danger for being herself. Nigeria is no more accepting now than it was in the 1970's when she first discovered love, and though a novel, the open hearts of these characters help us understand a world far removed from our own.
Compelling story submitted by Jinxyluis on July 23, 2018, 11:24am This book was extremely readable, despite being hard and heartbreaking often. The narrator's voice is so compelling that I was easily immersed in the story.
