SCHEMBECHLER AT HOME AGAIN
Bo is back!
Those are three words heard frequently in Ann Arbor today, referring to the return of Bo Schembechler, Michigan football coach to his home following a 19-day stay in a Pasadena hospital after suffering a heart attack on New Year’s Day.
Before he left Pasadena, Schembechler, whose team was defeated by Southern California in the Rose Bowl while he lay in the hospital, stopped by the Tournament of Roses headquarters and said, “I hope to be back again before too long.”
Max Colwell, manager of the tournament which sponsors the game and parade, told the coach, “you come back soon.”
At the hospital press conference on Saturday, Schembechler said he will follow doctor’s orders for the next six weeks “and then resume my duties as coach.
“I’m looking ahead to next year,” he said. “We’ll have a good team, a strong team, next fall and I expect to be running it.”
Michigan Athletic Director Don Canham and Associate Athletic Director Bump Elliott met Schembechler, his wife, Millie, and 31/2-month old child at Metropolitan Airport and drove them home.
Schembechler was taken in a wheelchair from the plane to a waiting car and there were some brief pauses for photographers.
Schembechler was in good spirits and looked to be in excellent condition.
While Schembechler, his wife and infant stayed in Pasadena, three other children came home earlier and have been attending school while staying at the home of assistant coach Larry Smith and his wife.
