Fonville Best Yet; Barten Wins Twice

By Dave Tefft

Michigan track forces, facing rugged dual meet competition this week Friday night, when Michigan State will come here, and only 12 days away from the Big Nine indoor championship meet, still could find reasons for cheer in reviewing Saturday night’s 60 1/2-53 1/2 defeat here at the hands of Ohio State.

Wolverine performances Saturday night were, on the whole, more the cheery than dreary side so far as Coaches Ken Doherty and Don Canham are concerned. Doherty was pleased with the showing of Hurdler Clay Holland who needs only experience to develop into a dangerous timber topper. He could grin heartily at the fact that Ed Ulvestad tied the versatile Lloyd Duff for first place in the pole vault—the first time the handy Buckeye has failed to defeat the Wolverine vaulter; and he finds pleasure in Tom Dolan’s high jump efforts which also were good for a first-place tie.

Then, of course, the top Michigan stars, Charlie Fonville and Herb Barten, performed up to expectations. Fonville, apparently the best shot putter in the world at present writing, came within two and three eighths inches of equaling the longest 16-pound put ever recorded. Barten ran good races  to win the mile and 880 and added third-place leg for the mile relay team.

Fonville set another American indoor record in his specialty as he arched the iron ball 56 feet, 10 and five-eighths inches on his second put of the night. That mark is four and one-eighth inches better than the record-smashing 56-foot, six and one-half-inch put he had two weeks ago at East Lansing and is only two and one-half inches shy of the 57-foot, one-inch world record established in 1934 by gigantic Jack Torrance of Louisiana State. Fonville had three other puts better than 55 feet Saturday night and got 52 feet, nine inches on his opening effort made for warm-up purposes before he had doffed his sweat clothes.

Barten showed a terriffic kick on the seventh lap of the mile run to win with ease and had no trouble in the 880. Ohio’s Don Washington showed a similar spurt in the two-mile to run away from Michigan’s Justin Williams who, nonetheless, gave an excellent performance in view of the fact he had been favoring a sore leg muscle and had practiced little prior to the meet.
