Capitol Market To Have Formal Reopening Friday

The Capitol Market at 123 E. Washington St., closed for the past two months following a fire, is now open for business and will formally open Friday.

More than $12,000 worth of new fixtures and equipment has been installed in the store and the interior has been completely rearranged to permit a serve-your-self system, James B. Thompson, the owner, announced.

Approximately $16,000 was spent on repairing the tire damage to the structure itself.

The blaze was the second to break out in the Washington St. structure. Thompson himself only narrowly escaped being trapped in the most recent fire, which started in the store basement.

New features of the establishment include an enlarged and entirely separate wine and liquor department, two check-out stands, and a new type of automatically folding market carts for transporting purchases from the display racks to the checking counters.

Interior Of Reopened Market

After being closed for two months following a fire in September, the Capitol Market at 123 E. Washington St. has reopened for business, and will hold a formal reopening Friday. The completely remodeled and rearranged interior is pictured above.
