If anyone doubted that summertime was here, he had only to stop by any of Ann Arbor's ten supervised playgrounds where, beginning last Monday, thousands of the city's youth bent to the shrill pleasures of directed recreation.

Earlier this week, a News' photographer stalked big and little games with the results shown above. What he shot was almost the entire rainbow of activities available to youngsters in Ann Arbor's 34th summertime play program.

The 11 scenes on this page were taken at a handful of the city's playgrounds in an attempt to display most of the wares of the recreation program.

At the top left, the young splashers are rushing into the wading pool at West Park; and the checker-players (top right) are confounding each other at Allmendinger Park.

In the second row, the toy band and the bar-swingers are playing in West Park, and the little paddlers are in the shallows at Island Park. The crucial horseshoe pit measurement is taking place at West Park; the intent ping-ponger was caught at Allmendinger Park; and the football pass play was broken up at Burns Park.

In the bottom row, a Burns Park instructor handles the croquet show-how; fielding practice is staged at West Park; and floating lesson is taught at the Municipal Beach.
