Actress Helen Hayes Visits Polio Patients Here

Actress Helen Hayes, who has been a leader in polio work since the tragic death of her daughter, Mary MacArthur, from that disease in 1949, visited polio patients in the Respiratory Center of the University of Michigan Hospital here Friday. Left to right are: Miss Hayes, who is appearing in the play, “Mrs. McThing,” in Detroit; Mrs. Gerald Cooper, Hillsdale; and Mrs. Milton Vreeland, Jackson. Miss Hayes helped to establish the first respirator center in the country, at Wellesly Hills. Mass., which is named after her daughter and is supported largely by theater people. There are five such centers in this country.
