First Graduation Rites Held At New High School

REAL OLD GRAD: C. Walter Tubbs of 921 E. Huron St. waves a placard proclaiming his membership in Ann Arbor High School’s Class of 1891. His spirits were high despite the stifling heat in the high school gymnasium where the graduation exercises were held last night.

AN ESPECIALLY BIG DAY: Not only did Peter W. Gale and Barbara Jean Clements receive their diplomas from Ann Arbor High School last night, they became engaged immediately after the graduation rites. Barbara’s sparkling new diamond ring is matched by her smile.

FIRST COMMENCEMENT IN NEW HIGH SCHOOL: The first class to be graduated from the brand new Ann Arbor High School took their diplomas last night from School Supt. Jack Elzay. Pictured here in their traditional caps and gowns are some of the 291 members of the 1956 graduating class and a portion of the audience, estimated at about 5,000 persons on hand for the ceremony in the gymnasium. Dr. John A. Hannah, president of Michigan State University was the commencement speaker.
