Staeb To Retire After
S3 Years As Banker

Alfred F. Staeb

Alfred F. 'Staeb, vice-presi-
dent of the State Bank and
Trust Co., will terminate a 53-
year career when he retires at
the end of this month.

Staeb, a native of Ann Arbor,
was educated in Ann Arbor pub-
lic schools and, in 1905, launched
his banking career in the for-
mer Ann Arbor Savings Bank. .

Advancing to assistant cashier
in 1917 and cashier in 1930,
Staeb headed the bank's loan
department until 1936. That was
the year the Ann Arbor Savings
Bank, the former Farmers and
Mechanics Bank and the for-
mer First National Bank
merged.

That was the year Staeb
joined the State Bank and Trust
Co. — then called the State
Savings Bank — asr a vice-
president.
Mortgages His Specialty

Mortgages constitute Staeb
specialty, and this is the de-
partment Staeb has headed
since 1936. " alls that in

mortgage toiais of $1,750,000.
Today, they total $6,650,000 be-
sides FHA mortgages which
amount to $1,440,000.

Mr. and Mrs. Staeb plan to
travel upon his retirement.

Staeb is a member of the
Zion Lutheran Church. He be-
longs to the Barton Hills Coun-
try Club and the Ann Arbor
Club. He is a c t i v e in other
groups as well — especially
athletic, civic and welfare
groups.
Makes Statement

His retirement plans were an-
nounced by Herman F. Gross,
president of the State Bank and
Trust Co., who made the follow-
ing comment:

"When an officer who has
made .an outstanding bu-
tton to an institution -uJ;..L.u to
the time of retirement, it is not
altogether easy for him or for
the other members of the or-
ganization to accept the change.

"It is recognized by the di-
rectors, officers and employes
of the State Bank and Trust
Co. and the general public that
Mr. Staeb is not only a sound
financial adviser, but an offi-
cer who has always gone out of
his way to give assistance of
every kind to those who can
to him."

Mr. and Mrs. Staeb live at
1421 Brooklyn Ave. Mrs. Staeb
