Senior Citizen Honors Given

Miss Henricka Beach, the first woman to be graduated from the University Department of actuarial science, and the Rev. Charles W. Carpenter, pastor of the Second Baptist Church of Ann Arbor from 1929 to 1966, were named Ann Arbor's Senior Lady and Man of the Year at the annual Senior Citizens Award Luncheon yesterday. Some 200 persons attended the presentation in the East Room of the North Campus Commons. The award is given in recognition of continuing service of persons 65 and over who live in the Ann Arbor area. Miss Beach, 80, a native of Brighton, received her MA in actuarial science from the U-M in 1913. In 1916 she joined the Provident Life Insurance Co. in Bismarck, N.D., where she worked until 1945. She has taught business administration at Beirut College for Women in Lebanon and English conversation at Doshisa University in Japan. She has been active in the Ann Arbor-Washtenaw Council of Churches as a member of its Church and Society Committee and with Ann Arbor Independent Housing, Inc. She also is a past president of the Women's Association of the Westminster Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Mr. Carpenter, 83, born in Stanford, Ky., attended the Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute in Tuskegee, Ala., and was graduated in 1909 as valedictorian of his class. He entered the ministry in 1912 in Detroit and in 1929 came to Ann Arbor as pastor of the Second Baptist Church. He has been active in the Ann Arbor Ministrial Association and served as its president for two years. He currently devotes his time to visiting and caring for the sick and needy of the community.
