Old School Burns Down, Arson Likely

Arson is believed the cause of a fire Sunday that gutted an old, unused school building in Superior Township.

Superior Township firefighters received an alarm about midnight. By the time they reached the blaze at 5310 Joy Rd., the building was totally in flames, according to reports.

The 40-by-30- foot structure, once the Town Line School, was leveled, reports said. Two persons spotted near the blaze were questioned about the fire by Washtenaw County Sheriff's deputies and released.

Superior Township Fire Chief Max Marken said the blaze appeared to have been set deliberately, but his department has been unable to determine what materials were used to touch off the fire.

No damage estimate was available, and firemen said they have been unable to learn who owns the building.
