Prison ordered in murder case
A 35-year-old Ypsilanti Township man convicted of murder in the shooting death last Feb. 11 of his brother-in-law was sentenced Thursday to 10 to 20 years in prison.
Washtenaw County Circuit Judge Edward D. Deake ordered the sentence for Michael P. Martin of 1457 Chestnut St., who in August pleaded guilty to second degree (unpremeditated) murder and later underwent psychiatric examination.
Martin was arrested shortly after Matthew G. Newberry, 38, of 557 Perry St., Ypsilanti, was shot five times with a .38-caliber revolver and died two hours later at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital.
Police said the two were together in Martin's apartment at the Maplewood apartment complex most of the day of the shooting, and had an argument before the Newberry was shot.

Vernon L. Johnson, 27, of 1484 Village Lane, Ypsilanti - 16 to 24 months in jail for using a closed bank account, with credit for 258 days already spent in jail.
Prezelle E. Williams, 59, of 1540 McCarthy Rd., Ypsilanti - ordered to enroll in an alcohol treatment program while sentencing on involuntary manslaughter is delayed one year.
Edward L. Ford, 39, of Albertsville, Ala. - one to three years in prison for breaking and entering.
Claudia L. Slocum, 17, of 5040 Bosun Way, Ypsilanti - three years probation and $550 fine and costs for receiving and concealing stolen property over $100.
John W. Damian, 26, of Belleville - 30 days on weekend work program, five years probation, $600 costs and $12,958 restitution for embezzlement.
Earsell B. Haywood (also known as George Booker), 18, of 936 W. Michigan Ave., Ypsilanti - 90 days on work program, five years probation and $870 fine and costs for larceny from a motor vehicle.
Michael J. Masterson, 20, of Lansing - 20 days on work program, three years probation, $360 cost and $660 restitution for breaking and entering.

Dwayne Pollard, 28, of 589 Perry St., Ypsilanti - 90 days in jail, three years probation and $610 fine and costs for carrying a concealed weapon.
Barry G. Conn, 27, of 9800 N. Territorial Rd., Dexter - 25 to 50 years in prison for breaking and entering, ruled a habitual offender with four or more felony convictions.
Sheila A. Jemison, 26, of 2127 Golfside Drive - three years probation, $360 cost and $163 restitution for uttering and publishing a forged check.
Michael E. Coffey, 17, of Jackson - 60 days in jail, two years probation, $440 court costs and $1,893 restitution for breaking and entering.
Mark Patton, 24, of St. Clair Shores - two years probation, $490 costs and $567 restitution for larceny by conversion.
