Former U-M Official Joins New York City School Board

rector of affirmative action programs at the University of Michigan and presently national
ctor of the YWCA of the U.S.A., has been appointed to the New York City Board of Education.
Baker, a nationally-known educator, civil rights and women's issues administrator, began serving her appointment July 1 after her appointment to the seven-member board by the president of the borough of Manhattan.
Before she became head of the YWCA, Baker was vice president and dean for graduate and children's programs at the Bank Street College of Education in New York.
She also served as chief of minorities and women's programs at the National Institute of Education in Washington, D.C., after she left her post at U-M in 1978.
Baker holds a B.A. degree in elementary education from U-M, as well as a masters in educational administration and a doctorate in curriculum and instruction.
She started her career as an elementary school teacher in Ann Arbor and also worked as a visiting professor at Eastern Michigan University and visiting professor in the Afro-American studies department at U-M. She was born and grew up in Ann Arbor.
