Judith B. Hartman, 73, passed away on Wednesday afternoon, February 25, 2004 at home with her devoted husband by her side following a brief illness. She was born October 13, 1930 the sixth child of Philip and Grace M. Bemis of Woburn, MA. She graduated from Wobrn High School in 1948, attended the University of Michigan, and several other colleges and university classes in her lifelong pursuit of textile knowledge. She was adept and skilled in weaving, rug hooking, knitting, quilting and textile lore from all over the world. Judy and Ens. Robert T. Hartman of Sebewaing, MI were married on June 15, 1952 in Ann Arbor. After his naval commitment in the Korean Conflict, the couple moved to Ann Arbor while Bob attended the University of Michigan Medical School. They settled in Milan in 1960 where Dr. Hartman conducted a Family Medical Practice for 29 years. Judy served on the Milan Library Board, Historical and Beautification Commissions as well as being a 42 year member and past president of the Milan Woman’s Club. She was also active in Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, school fund raisings, Milan’s Brunch with Bach and Others. She was a docent at the University of Michigan Museum of Art for eight years. Judy enjoyed words and creative writing, crossword puzzles and storytelling. Her special interest in recent years was the Rockville Maryland High School Pipe Band where her granddaughter Rosie is a piper. She created crafts for festivals and supported the Band in many other ways. Her family includes husband Bob of 51 years; her son, Neil (Jane Zimmerman) of Rockville, MD, their children, Sara, Rosemary and James; daughter, Amy of Manhattan, KS; son, Douglas (Barbara Vincent) of Herndon, VA, their children Daniel and William; son, Charles (Mary Lynn Sicklesteel), their children Emily and Steven of Cedarville, OH; son Thomas of Royal Oak, MI; her brother, Stuart (Ingrid) of Winchester, MA; sisters, Muriel Hayes of Belleville, IL and Jessie (Albert) Bosbach of Reading, MA; many nieces and nephew. She was predeceased by her parents; sister, Louise and brother, Charles. She has donated her body to University of Michigan Medical School for study. A memorial gathering celebrating her life will be held at a future date. Those wishing to honor Judy’s memory should plant flowers in their own gardens, tend them lovingly and share them generously or may make a contribution to St. Joseph Mercy Hospice to benefit others.
