A fourteen-year-old boy at school wrote this sentence in an exercise, "Ten men and fourwornan." His teacher pointed out to him the sentence with the remark: "ís it possible that you do not know after all these years at school that the plural of womanis women?" The boy scratched his head in a somewhat disconcerted way. "Anyway," he said, "I've often heard my father say that woman is a singular
