The Republicans throughout th country are on the run. The pros pects of Cleveland'; election keej growing brighter. She couldn't. The present editor of the Democrat is a wonaan. She never voted for a Democrat and never attended a Democratie caucus. She couldn't. But the owner of the Democrat, B. Frank Bower, is a Republican and the present editor of the Democrat doesn't know anything about politics. She does not always write her own editorials and is often hnposed upan by those who hold grudges or wish to do the Republican candidates some good. In the case of Mr. Suekey, she is simply venting her personal spite because some raonths ago the Hausfreund poked fun at one of her articles, and now that she finds the Democrats will not follow her lead, she attempts to defend her course by comparing it with the Argus two years ago. Republican papers never quoted the Argus articles against Democratie candidates. The Argus did not denounce Democratie candidates two years ago. It was simply silent as to two names. The Democrat does not even fly the name of one Democratie candidate for county or state office at the head of its editorial columns. It is guilty of the very thing in the case of all these nominees, it charges the Argus with being guilty of in the case of two candidates. And while the Democrat is silent concerning Cleveland and tariff reform it has the effrontery to claim, "The Democrat has been noted for the past fourteen years as the most outspoken and . vigorous champion of Democratie interests in Washtenaw county." Probably the Democrat can best advance Democratie interests by keeping silent. It did that most effectually last week. There was not one reason or one word of argument in its last issue why any one should be a tariff refonner, a Ijemocrat, should vote for Cleveland w any other Democratie nominee. If this is' the most outspoken champion of Democratie interests in Washtenaw the Democrats must be very hard up.
