Ex-President Cleveland -delivered a most soathiug criticisrn upou indecent newspaper publioations in hip letter denying a pardon to James B. Wilsun, sentenced in December, 1895, in Indiana, to two yeais' imprisonment for mailiDg obscene newspapers. The expresident said: "This convict was one of the editors and proprietors and a distributor through the mails and otberwise of a disgustingly vile and obscene newspapei. His conviction and sentence was an event distinctly tending to the pro motion of public morĂ¡is and the protection of the sons and daugbters of our land from flltb and corruption at a time when indecent newspaper publications are so dangerous and common. Everybody in favoi of cleanliness shuuld encourage the puuisbment of sucb offenses and desire that it shoulc be more frequeutiy imposed. While ] am muoh sarprieed by tbe number ot respcetable people who have joined in urging clemency in this case, my duty seems so clear that I am not in the least tempted to interfere with the jusl and wbolesotne sentenoe of tbe coart.
