A sálate in the British navy between two ships of eqnal rank is made by firing an equal nuniber of gnns. li the vessels are of unequal rank, the superior fires the fewer rounds. A royal salnte consists of (l)infiring 21 great gnns, (2) in the officers lowering their sword pointa and (3) in dipping the oolors. Phillips Brooks onoe said tha "the shortness of life is bound up with its fullness. It is to him who is most active, always thinking, feeling, working, caring for people, that life seems short.
