The council met in their room in the court house Monday evening. Absent, Aids. Ferdon and Mathewson. Minutes of last meeting rcad and approved. PETITION8. Of Mrs. N. II. Pierce, J. Q. A. Sessions, Chas. S. Millen and 171 others tor the purchaso of the old jail square, the snuie to bo used tbr public park purposes, auiong the signers bcing inany of the business men of the city. Mrs. D. S. Wood and Mrs. N. H. Pierce, in presenting this petition made some very eloquent argumenta in behalf of tho enterprise. It was referred to the general fand committee. Of Jacob Ganzhorn and 18 others, calling attentioD to the grading or condition of Spring street, by tue senior 3d ward alderman. Kefcrred to tho sidewalk committee. Of Berhard Norton and six others for a lamp post to be erected at the corner of 12th street, between tho pretuises of Mr. Norton and the old cemetery, in tho Cth ward. lleferred to the general fund committee. Of John Wosser, G. Grossman, and 32 other oitizens, for a pump to be placed in the well on North street, between 4th and 5th streets. Referred to general fund committee, with instructions to report at the next regular meeting. Of Christian Mack, president, aud Waj. W. Wheedon, secretary of the fire insuranco association, praying that "the crection of any wood or frame building, or any wood or frame addition to any building witliin the fire limits," be prohibited, as it "is an i in mediale, direct, and largc damage to all property owners in the neighborhood thereof," and matcrially increases the rates of insuranoe. Referred to fire department committee. REPORT OF COMMITTEES. Aid. By Aid. Keech : Whereat, It Is the duty of this council to see that new streets are lald out, and extending those whlch the growth of the city demands, and as Huron street Is one of the principal streets of our city, and Is now obstructed by what is known as the old burylng ground, by whlch the beauty of that street is marred, besldes belng a great hlnderance to the growth of the city In that directlon. Therefore oe it Retolved, That the mayor appolnt a committee of three to investígate and report to this council the cost of opening uaid street, and if practicable, to have the entlre cemetery removed so that the land can be used for a street and public park ; and further, that sald committee have the privilege of drawing from the contingent fuud the sum of $25 lf ueeded by them In securing any Information necessary to further this project. VVhich was adopted, and Aids. Keech, McOmber and Besimer appointed as the committee. By Aid. Fleming, tbat the chair appoint a committee of three to look after the market, the lease upon tbc land formerly used having expired. Carried, and Aids. Fleming, Besimer and the recorder appointed. Slightly domooratic committee. M1SCELLANEOUS BUSINESS. A jangle was ndulged in respecting the location of the lamp post on 5th street, noar Pontiac, and the conclusión reached that when a proper time should arrive the post would be found to bo in the right place. Aid. Fleming wanted the shade trees trimmcd (so that the lamp lighters could see the lamp posts whon they go around to light them) and Aid. Besimer moved that the city marshal bo directed to look up the matter and report needed limb amputations nccessary, and report the same to the council. The Chandler house sidowalk was again ventured upon, and a position reached which looked toward a compromise, the owners buying material, tha city doing the work. The bridge across Huron river, on Pontiac street, was reported in a dangerously dilapidated condition, and a committee of three appointed, on motion of Aid. Besimer, consisting of Aids. Kellogg, Martin and Fleming, to take into consideration the necessity of repairiug or rebuilding. Tho committee to report to tho mayor, and he to cali an extraordinary session of the council to take the thing uto immcdiate consideration. Tho bridge on High street was also discusscd and immcdiate action promised. As usual, Aid. Kitredgc, the chairman of the sidewalk committee, reported that no attention was paid to orders to re-build, and as hc had his hands full of other business, tendcred his resignation assuch chair man, recomending Aid. Ihompson as his predeecssor, which was unanimouslyagreed to. City Attorncy Knowlton reported threo legal notiees to serve upon property owncts, one upon tbo cast side of Main street, lot C, block 3 ; another along tho entire frontago of lot 1, block 4, División street- property of P. Ingalls- and a third upon the west sido of 4th street, block 16, which were initiatory to compulsory building of walks. The incthod pursued by the city pólice in making arrests was seVerely criticisod, on the ground that the county reccived all benefits from fine money, etc, when by right the city should reemve it. Upon motion of Aid. Keech the matter was referred to pólice committee. A general fusilade was induigcd in again over the bill of J. Hoffstetter, for refreshments - both liquid and solid - furnished the firemen last spring, and as usual, tho bill was tablcd. Adjourned.
