The new couimon council begins the year in almost as desperate a marnier as diii it8 predecessor. It has liad tliree meetings already this month- und the month is only a little over half out. Wednesday evening last council met in pecial aession to listen to the report of City Attorney Kinne in reference to the queslion of the election of BeDJ. J. Conrad as justlee of the peace for the vacancy caused by M. H. Brennan's removal froni the state. Mr. Kinne gave it as his opinión that under the law Mr. Conrad had been elected and was entitled to the office. The council upon thUadvice declared Mr. Conrad elected. City Marshal Sipley then prescnteil the names of Win. H. Campion, Michael Clark and D. W. Amsden, as his appointments for policemen, and asked the council to conflrm them, wliich was done. Aid. Kearns moved that Dr. Thos. J. Sullivan be added to the Board of Health, vvliich was agreed to, aa was also a moClon to make City Physiclan C. G. Dading a member of tlie saine. Council the adjourned. ANOTHER BESSION. Saturday eveuing the council again assembled. City Attorney Kiune addressed the body in reference to theaction necessary to be taken to complete the city's contract with the M. C. It. R. To this end petitions were presented liy Aid. Allmending signedby J. W. Knighr, E. B. Abel, L. Gruner and nine otlier freeliolders of the city asking the council to vacate all that portlo of Page street lying north of Fuller street, and that portion of State street lying between the north line of Fuller street, and the north line of the M. C. K. R. Co's right of way. Wliich ]etition were read and ordered placed on lile. Aid. Alhnendinger then offered a resolution setting apart Monday evening, May 3d, 1886, for the council to meet and consider the propositions and directing the City Recorder to post proper notices thereof. That the City Entfneer be required to make the proper survey for opening a new street from Detroit street to the new depot to be built by the M. C. R. B. Co., sald street to pass between the Carey and O'Neil propertles. the Hurveys to be under the supervisión of the streel cominlitee. On motion of Aid. Kearns Geo. W. Brown was appointed special pulicemau at the campus to serve without expense to the city. On motion of Aid. Ware Fred Meyer was re-appointed janitorof the 5th ward engine house, at a salary of $25 per ai mum. The Ftided Flower balt at Armory Flall, Tuesday evening April 27th.
