The New York jfyening Post of Wedncsday gave a full account of the corps of sharp shooters at Weehawkcn, and uuuouaced that a target practice would take place ia the afternoou. The iiriiig commenced at four o'clock, in the proseuco of a large number of spectators. Previous to that houv Col. Berdan appeared, and commenced swedging the baila iü a mould, thus giving them a regular form and exact size, ho as to fit the bore of tho piece, and receive the neccssary impresa from the spiral twist of tho rille. Tlm " man tarsret." christened JefF. Davis, was set up at a distauce of a little more than two hundred yards. Colouel Berdan inaugurated the firing in an easy, business like way, Lo loaded Lis rifle, an ordiuary target piece, with a telescopio íight, and approaohed the " rest." The visitors crowded lu'ouud him in cvory direction, exoepting, of courso, tbat oceupied by the muzzle of tbe rifle. A seuso of personal danger preserved a smalt openiug thcre, The wind blew quite heavilv. It will bo conceded that these cirourastances vt;re not particularly conducive to careful aud UDerriug aini. But Col. j Berdan is a man ot' wonderful nerve. - The crowd did cot at all disturb him. - ■d in the work with the utmost steadiness, Balanoing bis rifle for a moment, he fircd at the head nf the figure. When the smuke clearod away, the j hole made by the bullet was observed by ! the aid ot' tho telescope - the cheek, near the nose. Again the Coloncl loaded, and quickly fircd at the head, hitting it just over the frontispiece of tho cap, whicn was pamted upon it The third shot was fircd. " Put bis eye out," retnarked the Coloijel, The ball had struok near enougli to that orgau to dostroy its usu had it been a real oue. The fourth shot hit the faco. " I'll try nature's rest, said the Col., and hoprocecded to a knoll nearby, and, throwing hünself at its side, aacomodated his persou to its shape and took aim, but the peroussion cap only cxploded. - " J)a,vis is safe this time," ho ronwrked. " We'll try hiru again." Another cap Tas provided, and the image was strnok The aim"vas quite as accurate as that he had previously obtained. The sixth shot hit about two inches lower than fbo fifth. The seventh hit the top of the head. Loadiug again, the Colonel made ready to lire, "'Where will you liave this shot?" heinquiwdofone standiogby. "In tlieend of the uoSo," was tho auawer. " Between the eyes," suggestcd auother. At this moment the rille was dischargo. " You spoke too late," quietly reiuarked the Col. he has another nostril" A gentleman was called to Witness the efi'ect of the shot, and aftorwarda our reporter. It was as tho Colonel had said. The nose had an aiiditional aperturo. " Wh&e sball I put the next shot ?" the Colüuel inquired of the gentleman at whose retjucst ho had spotlcd the noae of the image. " Try h:s right eye," was the answer. No soouer said than was done. The ball enterod the lower part of tiie eye. The effect of this shot was earefully noted by several persons thro' the glas8. ' Will you teil me whero to hit him again ?" once more asked the Colonel of the person who had called the last two shots. That individual declined. He was gatisfled that the Golonel could hit anythiug, and it was not worth while to fire at tlic imago, whose face was riddled. " We will hit him once more, and now in the center of the forehoad." This shot the tenth, was the finest of the whole. - It took effect inidway between the front piece of the cap and the root of the nose, and direetly over that organ. The distances were almost niathemntically rate. , : Col. Bei-dan said lie would go on if any odo desired bim to do so. But it was universally agreed that ha had fired enough, that he had even Luiproved upon his great reputation, and to proceed further would be simply a waste of time. Colonel Berdan, his friends, and the representatives of tho press present, thon proeeedcd to the field and gave the target a particular exaniiuation. It had been previously fired at but the holes made liad been filled up, so that the effeets of the recent shots were evident. - The aocuracy of' this uring was never excelled. Colonel Berdan, with his oharaoteristKi modesty, however said little about it, but arranged for the trial of his men. Fortyeight shots were fired at the target by 'the inembers of his company - all but four of which would be elassed "mortal."' They were within a few iuches of eaeh other, aud generaliy struck the región of the head or limbs. During the progress of this work the Colonel exhibitod the greatest pleasure. Said he ou one occasion, " These are pioked men. I cannot teil how muny kegs of powder we have wastcd in getting them. They arè artists. If you wished to get up a concert, would you engage carriers to make your music ? This war with the rebels is simply a grand concert, and we are going to teach Davis, Beauregard and Co. to appreoiato Ilail Columbiaand Yaukee Doodie."
