Portretig Monroe, Aug. 9. The expedition that l.eft here on the 4th, under Major-General Foster, accompanied by the turreted iroo-ulad Sangamon and the gunboats doro Barney nnd Cohasset, proceeded up James River, ind when withinseven iniles of Fort Darling, at a point callee Dutoh Gap, n torpedo was esplodec under the bows of the Commodor Bqniéj, by a lockstring coppected wit the shore. The explosión was terrino It lifted the gunboat's bows ten fee out of the water, and threw a grea quantity of water high into the air which fülling on the deck, washed over board fifteen of the crew. Among them was H. Onshinir, commander o the Bnrney. Two sailors were drown ed - tho rest were saved. Muj.-Gt-n. Foster was on board when the explosión took placo. The enemy then opened npon them from the shore with a 12-pounder field pieoe. The Barney was penetrated by fifteen shots, besides a great number ot musket balls, but not a man was injured except the Paymaster, who waa slightly woundod by splinteia. The gunboat Cohasset received five 12-pound shot, one of which passed througli her pilothouee, inetnntly küling her conirnander, acting master Cox, striking him in the back. The Commodore Barney was towed to Newport News to be repaired. The object of thé reconnoissanoe was accomplished, and the fleet returned.
