Oh ! the quietcst home on eartlx had I, No thought of troublc, uo hint of caro ; Like a dreani of pleasure the dsys flew bj, And Peaco had foldcd her pinions there. But one day there joined in our houschold band A bald-headed tyrant from No-man'B-Iand. Oh ! th o despot camo in the dead of night, And no one ventured to ask him why ; Like elaves wc trembled beforG hls raight, Our heartn stood still when we heard him cry ; For never a soul could his power withstand, That bald-headed tyrant from No-inan's-land,. He ordprod us hero and he sent as there- Though never a wpcd could bis small lips epoak- With his toothless gums and his vacant stare, And his helpless Hinbs so frail and weak, Till I crïed, in a voice of 6tern command, 11 Go up, thou bald head from No-man's-land!" But hie abject elaves they turned on me ; Like the beara m Script ure they'd rend mo there, The while they worehiped with bended kueo Thla ruthlees wretch with the missing hail' ; For he ruïes them all with relentless hand, This bald-headed tyrant from No-man's-land. Theo seaiched for help in every clime, For peace had fled from my dweiling now, Till I nually thought of old Father Time And low"before him I made my bow, ' Wilt thou delive me out of his hand, This bald-headed tyrant from No-inan's-land?" Old Time he looked with a puzfcled stare, And a Bmile carne over his features grim, " I'll take the tyrant my care ; É Watch what my hnil'-glas3 doe to him. The veriest hUmbüg that ever was planned Is tiüs eanao bald-head from No-man's-land." Old Time is doing hia work full well - Much lesB of might does the tyrant wield: 3ut, ah ! with eorrow my heart will swell - And sad tears fall aa I see him yield. 3ould I stay the touch of the shriveled hand, I would keep the bald-head from No-man -a-land. For the Iosb of peace I have ceased to care ; Like other vassals, I've leurned, forsooth, Co love the wretch who forgot hia hair And hurried along without a tooth. And he rules me, too, with his tiny hftnd, Chis bald-headed tyrant from No-inan'a-land. - Harper's Magazine for Seplefiïiber.
