A fashionbly-dressed man went into Hunt & Roskell'p lnrge jewelry store in Bond street, London, selected nrticles worth $4,000, and tendered a .L1,000 noto in payjtnent. Mr. Eoskell ascertained that the noto was a forgery. Just as he was about to summon nssistance a cab was drawn rapidly np nnd two men ín pólice uniform hurrierilyentered, saying that thc man was an oid oft'ender, of wuom they were in search. Directing a portar to placo the jowolry in the cab and to come along with thcín as a witness, the men in uniform said that they would inform the tirm when their at teudance would be required to press the charge. Then they drove off with their priponor, leaving tbo jewelers loncl in tbeir praises of the proöcieuoy of the pólice. Next day, liowever, their porter, brutally beaten, roturued wjtli tlio information that the two supposed pólice ofncers were thievoo in disguise.
