Charles Manly was eleeted captain of company A, first regiment of Michigan's militia on Monday evening receiving forty-three votes, every member of tho company casting his ballot for him, a compliment rarely paid in the selection of a company commander. Prívate Manly responded before he resched the age of 18 to the cali of President Lincoln for 300,000 men and enlisted in this cuy for three years, June 18, 1861, in company A, the flrat r giment of this state, and went to the front under Col. Eoberston. While in the field he participated in the battles of Gaine's Mili, Malvern Hill, second Bull Run, Froderioksburg, where he was shot through the right shoulder, Chancfillorville, Upton's Ford, Mechanicsville, Snickor's Gap and Gettysburg, besidea many skirmishes between the hattlus. In tho last sanguinary encounter, and upon the second day of the protracted contest between Meade and Lee, Mr. Manly received a wound in the left arm whicli necossitated amputation. He was at this battle takeu prisoner and shortly subsequontly released. At this time he was sergeant of his conipany. Serving to Sept. 18, 1863, a period of twentyseven inontha, he was, owing to disability, mustered out the service. The Dosition came as it sbould. to Mr. Manly, unsought. The company has been derelict in matter of drill. When inspector of state militia Heath camo to the city a few weeks ago to inspect the company, it was a matter of some doubt whether we would longer have an organization of this kind. The company gave evidence of a fair degree of proficiency in drill, which fact added to twenty one enlistments during the past week, and a privato understanding that an experienced soldier would soon be chosen to the command, re-inspirited the members. Thore is nothing to prevent this organization from soon taking a position in the front rank of the best militia companiea of the state. Afterhis eiection Captain Manly, first thanking members for the consideration paid by an unanimous election to comtnandership, iaforined them what their duties were to become efficiënt militiamen, and that if they failed to reaeh a creditable standard in drill, he would try and not let the fault rest on their captain. The company have decided to give an annual excursión to Put-in Bay sometime about the iniddle of this month, and have placed the details in the hands of a committee. It is expected the company wül go into camp at Adrián nearly sixty muskets stroner. Capt. Manly and Lieutenanta Kay and Ludlow and other members of the oompany left tor Jackson yesterday to particípate in the eleotion of colonel of first regiment.
