The Board of Education Wednesday approved Supt. R. Bruce McPherson's recommendations and promoted two Ann Arbor school principáis to key positions in the school district's central adminis! tration. j F. David Aberdeen, principal at Thurj ston Elementary School for the past five years, was appointed deputy superintendent for planning, and William Mays, Jr., principal at Newport Elementary School, was named to the new position of assistant superintendent for curriculum implementation. I Aberdeen will receive an annual salary of $28,750 and will begin his position on Monday. Mays will receive $25,750 annually and wUl assume responsibilities Wednesday. Aberdeen replaces the former deputy superintendent of planning, Philip Mcllnay, who resigned from his position in June. Aberdeen will be responsible for the decentralization and coordination of curriculum development, development of a capital plan, and coordination of system-wide evaluation procedures and documentation. Mays will coordínate and supervise the j activities of five school district offices - Early Childhood, Multi-Ethnic Studies, Instructional Media, Reading Staf f Development and Tutorial Services. He will also assist and monitor individuall school staffs in the implementation of I curriculum, reading and multi-ethnic ofj [programs. I Aberdeen began his teaching career inj IChicago during 1954. He came to Ann Ar-I lbor in 1959 as a teacher at Pattengilll [Elementary School and subsequentlyl [taught at Carpenter and Allen. Hel served as principal of j ! Meadowview from 1962 to 1964 and was ] coördinator of special projects for the I district from 1964 to 1966. Aberdeen was j named principal at Thurston in 1967. Following a year at Albion College, I Aberdeen enrolled at the U-M in 1949. He i received his AB degree there and later earned his MA and PhD degrees from the same school, completing his doctoral program in 1969. Dr. and Mrs. Aberdeen reside at 1737 Tudor with their two sons. Mays received his BA degree from Eastern Michigan University in 1954 and was awarded an MS degree by the U-M in 1958. Prior to moving to Newport, he was a speech correctionist for the Ann I Arbor school system for eight years. Mr. ( and Mrs. Mays and their two daughters reside at 1931 Coronada Drive.
