Mayor-Elect Wendell E. Hulcher appointed Mrs. Robert S. Dunham Saturday to head a temporary steering committee to establish an Ann Arbor chapter of People-to-People. Appointed to serve with Mrs. Dunham were Samuel J. Eldersveld, former mayor and man of the University's Political Science Department; Prof. James K. Pollock of the U-M Political Science Department; Mrs. Douglas Williams; and Mrs. H. R. Crane. Others are to be named. The appointments were made after a meeting of about 60 interested persons and representatives of community organizations at City Hall. John Lindeman and Bruce Tippet, representatives of the national program, explained the mechanics of establishing a local chapter and pointed out its advantages. Lindeman and Tippet explained that a local charter would be granted upon the recommendation of the temporary steering committee. Minimum membership requirements would be 30 dues-paying members. Dues would be $1 for local school students, $2.50 for University students and $7 for adults. The People-to-People Program was started in 1956 by former President Eisenhower to promote better understanding among the nations of the world.
