Exactly 78 plastic bags full of leaves, twigs and other natural yard refuse left over by winter are neatly lined up along the curb waiting to be collected by city trucks. The outdoor spring cleanup project that produced such sizeable results was conducted all last week after school by the Browns' son, Bill, and two friends. At a quarter a bag, a kid could get rich.

The Ann Arbor High Parents-Teacher Association also shared in the recognition in the national contest with a $50 check. Nicholas J. Prakken, PTA president (left) accepted that award. Charles A. Norton of Detroit (right), representative of the sponsoring Holmes-Darst Coal Corp of Knoxville, Tenn., made the presentations at the high school.

At left is the $290,000 municipal carport at First and Washington Sts., only one block south of Huron St. and two blocks west of Main St. At right [not pictured here] is the city parking lot on S. Fifth Ave. between William and Washington Sts., only one block east of Main St. Both parking areas, therefore, are within one block of the main business districts. One other major city lot, the Maynard St. lot, which is not shown in the pictures, is only located one block from the State St. campus shopping and business area.

Cornfield Airstrip: Northfield township has its own airstrip now, a 1,600-foot runway cutting through a cornfield on the Douglas F. Nollar farm at 5766 Nollar Rd., about five miles north of Ann Arbor. The runway is part of the Northfield Aero Service, a newly-organized aircraft repair and instruction station operated by a three-man staff. Note light planes being serviced near barns in center.

SHANTY VILLAGE OUTPOST: These fishing shacks at the Boyne City end of Lake Charlevoix are the outposts for Smeltania, a community of hundreds of shanties about a mile out on the ice. Ice-fishing enthusiasts from all over Michigan and from other states come here to angle for the silver-sided smelt whose numbers make large catches possible. Visible in the picture is one end of the Christmas trees that form a line between the shore and Smeltania to guide fisherman when nights are dark or stormy.

Masonry walls are about one-third completed for a 140-boy housing unit going up in the second construction area, background. In the foreground is the school's new reception center and classroom building. Another housing and special treatment unit accommodating 162 boys is located down the road from the reception center.
